SA20 has launched its Season 5 campaign, setting the stage for the next edition of South Africa's premier franchise T20 competition. The fifth season is scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21, 2027, with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape opening the tournament against Pretoria Capitals at St George's Park in Gqeberha.

The opening fixture is a repeat of the previous season's final and will begin a month-long cricket programme across South Africa. The campaign launch on November 5 also brought ticket sales into focus, with organisers outlining a schedule built around Monday rest days and weekend double-headers.

Defending champions to open the season

Three-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape will begin their title defence against Pretoria Capitals on January 17. The match will be played at St George's Park, one of the competition's established venues, in Gqeberha. The repeat-final fixture gives the new season an immediate rematch between two sides that reached the title decider in the previous edition.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape have been the most successful team in the league's first four seasons, winning titles in 2023, 2024 and 2026. MI Cape Town claimed the other championship in 2025. The latest campaign therefore begins with the three-time winners looking to extend their record, while Pretoria Capitals get an early opportunity to challenge the defending champions.

The tournament is scheduled to conclude on February 21, with the final at Newlands in Cape Town. The competition will once again feature all six franchises, taking the league across several major cricket centres during the South African summer.

A travelling cricket festival across South Africa

After the opening week in Gqeberha, the SA20 programme will move through Paarl, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg. The organisers have described the opening week as action-packed, before settling into a weekly rhythm designed to balance match days and recovery time.

Mondays will be designated as rest days, while weekends will feature double-headers. The format is intended to give supporters the opportunity to spend a full day at the ground, with cricket and entertainment forming part of the matchday experience. It also creates a regular pattern for fans planning visits during the tournament's January and February window.

League Commissioner Graeme Smith said the fifth season was intended as a thank-you to supporters who have filled stadiums and helped establish the competition. He also pointed to the mix of international players, South African national-team regulars and emerging local talent as a central part of the league's appeal.

Tickets go on sale for the milestone season

Tickets for Season 5 went on sale on November 5 through the official SA20 website. Prices for designated frenzy tickets for all opening matches and selected fixtures start at $3, according to the campaign launch information. Tickets for the playoffs and the final on February 21 are also available.

Fans will be able to purchase tickets online, while ticket offices at the six stadiums are scheduled to open from November 15. The early launch gives supporters an opportunity to plan for the opening fixture, weekend double-headers and the closing stages of the competition.

The fifth season marks an important milestone for a league that began in January 2023. In an official announcement marking five years of the competition, SA20 said it had sold more than 1.6 million tickets and reached over 500 million television viewers across its first four seasons. The league also reported a social media following of four million.

SA20 looks to build on its first four seasons

The competition's first four editions have featured two champions, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape winning three titles and MI Cape Town taking the 2025 crown. That record gives the new season a clear storyline, but the league's broader focus remains on combining high-profile overseas players with South African talent and creating a strong stadium experience.

Smith said the league was looking forward to welcoming leading T20 cricketers to South Africa alongside Proteas players and the next generation of local talent. The campaign launch places that blend at the centre of the Season 5 message, while the fixture window and ticketing details give supporters a clearer picture of the summer ahead.

With the opener set for January 17 in Gqeberha and the final scheduled for February 21 at Newlands, SA20 Season 5 now has its principal dates and opening match in place. The next stage for teams and fans will be the build-up to the first ball, as the defending champions prepare to begin another title defence and the other five franchises aim to challenge them.
