Daniil Medvedev advanced to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters 2026 after defeating long-time rival Stefanos Tsitsipas 6–4, 7–5 on Wednesday, October 14.
The fifth-seeded Russian delivered a controlled performance against the Greek, winning in straight sets to continue his campaign at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai, China. The victory also marked Medvedev’s third consecutive appearance in the tournament’s quarter-finals.
Medvedev established control in the opening set, securing a break before closing it out 6–4. His reliable serving limited Tsitsipas’ opportunities to put pressure on him.
The second set was more closely contested, with both players competing through the early games. At 5–5, Medvedev capitalised on a crucial opportunity in the Greek’s service game to move ahead before serving out the match at 7–5.
Medvedev did not face a break point during the contest, according to match reports, underlining the effectiveness of his service performance. His ability to remain composed during the key moments proved decisive against an opponent who had shown strong form earlier in the tournament.
Tsitsipas entered the match after recovering from a set down to defeat American Taylor Fritz in the previous round. However, he was unable to find a way past Medvedev’s consistent serving and baseline play.
The two players have had a competitive rivalry over several seasons, with previous meetings sometimes featuring tense exchanges. Their Shanghai encounter was decided primarily by the quality of their tennis, with Medvedev taking his opportunities at the decisive moments.
The loss ends Tsitsipas’ run in the men’s singles draw, while Medvedev moves into the last eight.
Medvedev has enjoyed considerable success in Shanghai. He won the tournament in 2019 and has repeatedly progressed deep into the draw.
His latest victory places him among a select group of players who have reached the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals in three consecutive editions. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray had previously achieved the same feat.
The result adds another strong performance to Medvedev’s 2026 campaign and keeps him in contention for another deep run at one of the ATP Tour’s leading hard-court tournaments.
Medvedev will face the winner of the match between American Tommy Paul and Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in the quarter-finals.
Both potential opponents present different challenges, and Medvedev will need to maintain his serving consistency and baseline discipline to continue his progress.
With the tournament entering its decisive stages, the Russian will be aiming to build on his performance against Tsitsipas and move closer to another Shanghai title.
