Kimi Antonelli arrives at the United States Grand Prix in Austin with his first Formula 1 drivers’ world title within mathematical reach, but the Mercedes driver needs more than a victory to settle the championship this weekend. After the Singapore Grand Prix, Antonelli leads teammate George Russell by 102 points and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton by 111, with a specific combination of results required at Circuit of The Americas on October 25.
Antonelli has 340 points, Russell 238 and Hamilton 229. Max Verstappen is fourth on 221, followed by Charles Leclerc on 215 and Lando Norris on 201. The standings leave five drivers besides Antonelli mathematically in contention before the Austin round, although a win for the championship leader would eliminate several of those challengers.
The equation is straightforward: Antonelli must win the United States Grand Prix, Russell must finish ninth or lower, and Hamilton must finish fifth or lower. All three conditions must be met for the title to be decided in Austin. If Antonelli wins but either rival finishes high enough to keep the points gap below the required threshold, the championship will continue to the next round.
A Grand Prix win awards 25 points, while second place is worth 18 and third place 15. The title calculation also depends on the number of races left. After Austin, five Grands Prix remain on the calendar, meaning a maximum of 125 points will still be available. Antonelli therefore needs to build a lead that cannot be overturned across those remaining events.
If Antonelli wins and Russell finishes ninth, the gap between the Mercedes teammates would reach 125 points. That is enough to decide the championship in Antonelli’s favour on the countback rule, provided Hamilton also finishes fifth or lower. An Austin victory would be Antonelli’s ninth of the season; Russell could win each of the five remaining races and reach only eight victories, leaving Antonelli ahead on the first tie-break criterion if they ended level on points.
- Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes — 340 points
- George Russell, Mercedes — 238 points
- Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari — 229 points
- Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing — 221 points
- Charles Leclerc, Ferrari — 215 points
- Lando Norris, McLaren — 201 points
The standings reflect the championship picture following the Singapore Grand Prix. Antonelli strengthened his position with a podium finish there, while Russell’s ninth-place result left the teammates separated by 102 points. Hamilton remains third, but needs a strong Austin result to keep the title fight alive beyond this round.
Verstappen, Leclerc and Norris remain mathematically in the championship fight before the race, but an Antonelli victory in Austin would put the title beyond their reach regardless of their own finishing positions. Russell and Hamilton are the two rivals whose results are central to the immediate title-clinching scenario.
Mercedes also has a substantial lead in the constructors’ standings, but that championship is a separate contest and cannot be clinched in Austin under the current points situation. The team’s focus this weekend is therefore twofold: maximise its race result and manage the pressure of a possible drivers’ title decision.
If he secures the championship in Austin, Antonelli would become Formula 1’s youngest world champion at 20 years and 61 days, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s age when he won the 2010 title. Antonelli’s season has already put him in a strong position, but the Austin calculation leaves little room for error: he needs the win and help from the results of both Russell and Hamilton.
If the required combination does not happen, the title fight moves on to Mexico City on November 1, followed by São Paulo, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The United States Grand Prix is therefore Antonelli’s first match point, not a guaranteed coronation. The official race result and updated standings will determine whether the championship is decided in Texas or remains open for the final five rounds.
