Kieron Pollard has informed Joburg Super Kings that he will be unavailable for the 2027 SA20 season, with the decision coming a day after Mumbai Indians appointed him head coach for IPL 2027. Chennai Super Kings chief executive Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that the Johannesburg-based franchise would now look for a replacement.
Joburg Super Kings had bought the former West Indies all-rounder for R1.5 million at the SA20 auction on October 7. His withdrawal changes the franchise’s plans ahead of the fifth season, scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21, 2027.
Viswanathan confirmed Pollard had communicated that he would not be able to represent Joburg Super Kings in the upcoming campaign. He also said the franchise would begin looking for a replacement, leaving the team with a vacancy after securing Pollard at the auction earlier this month.
The decision was reported on October 25, shortly after Mumbai Indians announced Pollard’s promotion from batting coach to head coach for IPL 2027. Pollard has been closely associated with Mumbai Indians for many years, and the new coaching assignment places him at the centre of the franchise’s preparations for the next IPL season.
Although the timing has led to speculation that the coaching role influenced his availability, the franchises have not publicly confirmed a specific reason for the withdrawal. The confirmed position is that Pollard informed Joburg Super Kings he would not play, and the team now intends to find another player.
Joburg Super Kings secured Pollard for R1.5 million at the October 7 auction. The signing was notable because Pollard had traditionally represented Mumbai Indians or teams associated with its ownership in leagues where the group had a presence. Joburg Super Kings, by contrast, are part of the Chennai Super Kings group.
MI Cape Town did not bid for Pollard at the auction and instead bought Shimron Hetmyer for the same amount. A Mumbai Indians source told Cricbuzz that the franchise had no objection to Pollard playing for another team in a different league and that it had not issued instructions for him to withdraw.
That clarification is important because the decision involves two franchise groups that both operate teams in the SA20. Mumbai Indians’ owners run MI Cape Town, while Joburg Super Kings are linked to Chennai Super Kings. The available reporting does not establish that ownership links caused Pollard’s decision.
Pollard played for Mumbai Indians in the IPL from 2010 through 2022, appearing across 13 seasons and featuring in all five of the franchise’s title-winning campaigns. After retiring as an IPL player, he continued to work with the organisation as batting coach and remained involved with MI-linked teams in other T20 competitions.
His franchise career has included appearances for MI Cape Town in the SA20, MI New York in Major League Cricket and MI Emirates in the ILT20. He has also continued to play for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, where Mumbai Indians does not operate a team. He is also associated with MI London in The Hundred as head coach.
The appointment as Mumbai Indians head coach is a major new responsibility for Pollard. He replaces Mahela Jayawardene in the role, with the franchise looking ahead to IPL 2027. The timing is significant because team planning and preparation for a new season often begin well before the competition itself.
Joburg Super Kings must now identify a replacement for Pollard before the SA20 season begins in January. The franchise will need to decide whether to seek a similar middle-order power hitter or adjust its squad balance with a player who offers a different role.
The fifth edition of the SA20 is scheduled for January 17 to February 21, 2027. With several weeks remaining before the tournament, Joburg Super Kings have time to revise their plans, but Pollard’s withdrawal means one of their auction decisions will have to be revisited.
For the wider T20 circuit, the development illustrates how players’ responsibilities across franchise leagues can change quickly as coaching and playing commitments evolve. In Pollard’s case, the confirmed facts are his decision to withdraw, the franchise’s plan to seek a replacement and his new Mumbai Indians coaching role. The precise personal reasons behind the decision have not been officially detailed.
