MS Dhoni has openly acknowledged Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s recent rise over Chennai Super Kings, saying that a team’s reputation on paper matters far less than its performance on the day. Speaking at a healthcare event in Bengaluru on October 24, 2026, the former CSK captain said RCB had done exceptionally well over the previous two seasons while Chennai had struggled to maintain the same consistency.
Dhoni’s comments, reported by NDTV and ANI and carried by other outlets, came as CSK look toward IPL 2027 after a difficult run. He also expressed hope that injuries would stay away and that players would be available throughout the season, underlining how fitness and clear responsibilities can influence a team’s results.
Dhoni said that in the short format, the gap between the best teams can be narrow and match-day execution is decisive. “How good you are on paper hardly matters,” he said, explaining that performances on a particular day carry more weight than reputations or expectations.
He did not try to dismiss the difference between the two franchises’ recent results. Dhoni acknowledged that CSK had struggled over the last two years and said RCB had consistently performed better during that period. His remarks were an unusually direct recognition of a rival’s success from a figure closely associated with Chennai’s championship era.
The contrast has been visible in the IPL results. The Tribune’s ANI report said RCB won back-to-back titles in 2025 and 2026 under captain Rajat Patidar, while CSK ended the 2026 season in eighth place after finishing last in 2025. These results form the backdrop to Dhoni’s assessment that sustained performance, rather than reputation alone, has separated the teams in recent seasons.
CSK have a strong record in the league, including titles in 2021 and 2023, but past success does not guarantee future results. Dhoni’s comments focused on the need to recognise a difficult period honestly and identify what needs to change. He described setbacks as part of sport and said the real test of character comes when a team is not doing well.
That message points toward preparation rather than nostalgia. A team must assess its performances, define responsibilities and make practical improvements if it wants to return to contention. For CSK, the challenge is to turn lessons from recent seasons into a more consistent campaign in 2027.
Dhoni also raised the importance of keeping injuries under control so that players can remain available across the season. Availability affects selection continuity and the ability to build combinations, particularly in a tournament where teams must adapt quickly to changing match situations. He expressed hope that CSK could have a stronger season if players remain fit.
He added that it becomes easier for a team when players understand their roles and responsibilities. That is a straightforward but important requirement in T20 cricket, where tactical decisions, batting positions, bowling assignments and fielding plans can change from game to game. A clear role gives players a better idea of what is expected of them under pressure.
Dhoni also spoke warmly about playing in Bengaluru, describing it as a ground where the ball can travel a long way and even a mistimed shot may reach the boundary. He said batters enjoy the venue’s high-scoring character, while bowlers face pressure because they are expected to contain aggressive hitting.
He expressed hope for another close CSK-RCB contest when the teams meet in Bengaluru in 2027, saying the goal is to entertain spectators. His comments placed the rivalry in a sporting context: results matter, but the spectacle and connection with supporters remain central to the league.
For IPL followers, Dhoni’s assessment is a reminder that rebuilding a competitive side requires more than a celebrated name or a successful past. RCB’s recent titles show the value of consistency, while CSK’s next task is to improve availability, clarify roles and execute better across the season. The 2027 campaign will reveal whether those priorities translate into results.
Dhoni’s comments do not announce a specific team change or guarantee a particular outcome for CSK. They offer a clear view of the areas he believes matter most: honest evaluation, fitness, role clarity and the ability to perform when the match is on the line.
