Former South Africa fast bowler Allan Donald has been appointed bowling coach of Joburg Super Kings ahead of the 2027 SA20 season. The franchise confirmed the appointment on October 13, 2026, as it continues to reshape its coaching staff for the next edition of South Africa’s premier T20 competition.
Donald will work alongside head coach Albie Morkel, who took charge after Stephen Fleming stepped down following the 2026 season. His appointment brings extensive international and franchise coaching experience to the Johannesburg-based team.
Donald, widely known as “White Lightning” during his playing career, was one of South Africa’s leading fast bowlers after the country returned to international cricket.
Following his retirement as a player, he moved into coaching and worked with several international and domestic teams. His coaching career included a role with New Zealand ahead of the 2011 World Cup and a spell as South Africa’s bowling coach under Gary Kirsten, which continued through the 2015 World Cup.
Donald has also worked in franchise cricket, including coaching positions with Pune Warriors India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League. He later served as Bangladesh’s pace-bowling coach, remaining with the national setup until the 2022 T20 World Cup.
That combination of international and T20 franchise experience will be valuable as Joburg Super Kings prepare their bowling unit for the upcoming SA20 campaign.
Donald’s appointment is part of a broader coaching transition at Joburg Super Kings. Former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel was appointed head coach after Fleming’s departure following the previous season.
The new setup will be tasked with preparing the team for the fifth edition of the SA20 tournament. Donald’s specialist role will focus on the bowling group, while Morkel leads the overall coaching operation.
The franchise has also made changes elsewhere in its support staff, including the appointment of Pierre de Bruyn as fielding coach, according to reports on the team’s latest coaching appointments.
Joburg Super Kings have yet to win an SA20 title and will be looking to make progress in the 2027 season.
The franchise has added several players during the recent auction, including experienced South African batter Faf du Plessis, all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, West Indies star Kieron Pollard and Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani. The signings give the team a mix of international experience and additional options across its batting and bowling departments.
Donald’s arrival adds another experienced voice to the coaching group. His task will be to help the bowlers prepare for different conditions, develop match plans and execute them under the pressure of T20 cricket.
The 2027 edition will give Joburg Super Kings another opportunity to compete for their first SA20 championship. The team’s coaching changes and squad additions point to preparations aimed at improving its competitiveness in the tournament.
Donald’s appointment is an important part of those preparations, although the impact of the new coaching group will ultimately be measured by performances on the field.
