Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost their women’s doubles opener 17-21, 18-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chih-Chun and Yang Chu Yun.
Indian women’s singles players Asmita Chaliha and Tanvi Sharma advanced to the round of 16 at the French Open badminton tournament in France on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Chaliha defeated China’s Hang Qian Xi 21-18, 24-22 in 39 minutes, while Tanvi Sharma beat compatriot Isharani Baruah 21-12, 21-12 in 32 minutes. India’s day also brought early exits in both doubles events, including a three-game defeat for men’s pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
Chaliha secured her place in the next round with a straight-games win over Hang Qian Xi. The scoreline showed a competitive contest, particularly in the second game, which Chaliha closed out 24-22 after taking the opener 21-18. The match lasted 39 minutes.
The narrow finish in the second game made the result more than a routine straight-games victory. Chaliha had to keep her composure through points beyond the usual 21-point target before she could complete the win. The result moved her into the women’s singles round of 16 at the French Open.
Tanvi also progressed in straight games, defeating fellow Indian Isharani Baruah 21-12, 21-12. The match lasted 32 minutes, making it the shorter of the two Indian women’s singles victories reported on Tuesday.
Because the opening-round match was an all-Indian contest, only one player could move forward from that tie. Tanvi controlled the score in both games and completed the win without needing a decider. Her advancement alongside Chaliha gave India two representatives through to the women’s singles round of 16 from these matches.
The singles successes were offset by defeats in the doubles draws. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, identified in reports as the world’s No. 5 men’s doubles pair, went out after losing to French combination Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov. The Indian pair took the second game 21-18 after dropping the first 19-21, but lost the decider 13-21. The contest lasted just over an hour.
The women’s doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also exited in the round of 32. They were beaten 17-21, 18-21 by Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chih-Chun and Yang Chu Yun. The straight-games result meant the Indian pair could not extend its campaign into the next round.
The opening-day results underline the contrasting fortunes of India’s singles and doubles players at this stage of the tournament. Chaliha and Tanvi both completed their matches in two games and progressed, while the two Indian doubles combinations covered in the reports were eliminated. The outcomes leave the women’s singles campaign with two players moving forward from Tuesday’s matches, while the doubles losses end the tournament for those pairs.
For Chaliha, the close 24-22 second game showed the importance of closing out a tight finish rather than allowing an opponent to force a deciding game. Tanvi’s 21-12, 21-12 result was more decisive on the scoreboard and gave her a clear win in a match where the players shared the same national flag but competed for an individual place in the draw.
The French Open is part of the international badminton calendar, and results at this level provide Indian players with opportunities to test themselves against overseas opposition and against compatriots in the same draw. The next stage will bring a new challenge for Chaliha and Tanvi as they continue their women’s singles campaigns. Any further opponent or match-time details should be checked against the tournament’s official draw and schedule.
