Behind every medal is a journey of discipline, sacrifice and determination. Indian Army athletes demonstrated that spirit at the 2026 Asian Games, delivering the Army’s best-ever medal haul at the continental competition and turning their attention towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
In a video feature titled Asian Games Heroes: Indian Army Athletes Share Their Journey of Grit, Glory & Dreams of LA 2028, News18’s The Breakfast Club spotlights the athletes behind the achievements and their ambitions for the next major stage of international sport.
The feature comes after an impressive Asian Games campaign in which Indian Army athletes won 20 medals, including six gold, eight silver and six bronze. Their performances formed a significant part of India’s overall medal tally.
The Army’s sporting contingent secured 20 medals at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The haul comprised six gold, eight silver and six bronze medals, marking the organisation’s strongest performance at the Games.
According to an official release, 62 Army athletes competed across 15 disciplines. Their achievements contributed to India’s fourth-place finish, with the overall Indian contingent winning 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze.
The Army’s six gold medals represented a 100 per cent increase over its gold-medal tally at the 2022 Asian Games.
The result reflects the contribution of the Army’s sports development system, which identifies promising athletes and supports their progression through specialist coaching, training facilities, technical assistance and competition experience.
Several Army athletes produced standout performances in Japan.
Naib Subedar Neeru Dhanda won two gold medals and one silver, becoming the first Indian woman to win gold in the individual women’s trap shooting event at the Asian Games.
Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh secured two silver medals and one bronze. He also became the first Indian male track-and-field athlete to win three individual medals at a single edition of the Asian Games.
Havildar Sawan Barwal won silver in the men’s marathon with a national-record time of 2:11:37, ending India’s 44-year wait for an Asian Games medal in the event.
Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare also earned a historic medal in the men’s high jump, ending a 56-year wait for India in the discipline at the Games.
These performances illustrate the breadth of the Army’s contribution across shooting, athletics and other sporting disciplines.
Elite sporting success extends well beyond competition day. Athletes must balance demanding training schedules with recovery, injury management, travel, selection pressure and the mental challenge of performing at major international events.
For athletes serving in the armed forces, sports preparation also takes place within a structured military environment. Official statements have highlighted the importance of discipline, teamwork, scientific training and support from coaches, physiotherapists, nutritionists and families.
The News18 video feature brings attention to the people behind the medals and the determination required to compete at the highest level. Specific personal accounts and quotations should be added only after verification from the original video.
The Asian Games results provide a platform for the next stage of preparation: the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Following the Games, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for a focused and systematic approach towards LA 2028, urging athletes, trainers and support staff to set higher goals and work towards an even stronger performance.
Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth has also emphasised the role of training, support systems and athlete development in building on the Army’s results.
The next challenge will be to translate continental success into Olympic-level performances. That process requires sustained preparation, careful competition planning and continued support for athletes across disciplines.
An Asian Games medal does not automatically guarantee Olympic qualification or a medal in Los Angeles, but the campaign provides valuable experience and momentum as preparations continue.
The Army’s Asian Games campaign is an example of how a structured sporting environment can help athletes develop their abilities and represent India on the international stage.
From Neeru Dhanda’s historic shooting performances to Gulveer Singh’s multiple medals and Sawan Barwal’s marathon record, the results showcased achievement across different disciplines.
As the focus shifts to LA 2028, the athletes’ journeys underline a broader message: international success is built through years of preparation, resilience, teamwork and the support of the people working behind the scenes.
