Will O’Rourke Ruled Out of India Series as New Zealand Manage Injury Setback

New Zealand fast bowler Will O’Rourke will miss the upcoming home series against India after New Zealand Cricket confirmed that he needs additional time to recover from injuries to his left hamstring and calf.

The decision was announced on October 10, 2026, as New Zealand prepare to host India across five T20 Internationals, five One-Day Internationals and two Test matches. O’Rourke had been in contention for the ODI and Test series, but the team management has opted against rushing his return.

New Zealand are targeting his recovery ahead of the four-Test tour of Australia in December, with the medical team prioritising rehabilitation and a gradual increase in his bowling workload.

Why Will O’Rourke Will Miss the India Series

New Zealand Cricket confirmed that O’Rourke will not feature against India while he continues his recovery. The decision was taken in consultation with the player, head coach Rob Walter and the team's medical staff.

O’Rourke had been expected to feature in both the ODI and Test series. However, the management decided that allowing additional rehabilitation time would provide a safer route back to international cricket.

Walter said the team wanted O’Rourke to rebuild his bowling workload gradually rather than risk returning before he was fully fit.

A Difficult Period With Injuries

O’Rourke previously missed approximately seven months of cricket because of a back stress fracture before returning to international action earlier in 2026.

He subsequently suffered a hamstring tear during the final Test against England in June. A calf strain during training in late August added another setback to his recovery.

The latest decision means he will miss an important home international assignment against India, but New Zealand's medical staff are prioritising his longer-term availability.

Australia Tour Is the Next Target

New Zealand are preparing for a four-Test series in Australia beginning in December. The opening Test is scheduled for Perth on December 9.

Walter said O’Rourke could ideally return for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, while also expressing hope that the bowler might be ready for the Australia Test tour.

That remains a target rather than a confirmed return date. His participation will depend on his rehabilitation progress and medical clearance.

New Zealand Face Other Injury Concerns

O’Rourke's absence follows further injury setbacks for New Zealand's white-ball squad.

Batter Mark Chapman sustained a hamstring tear while playing in Europe, while fast bowler Zak Foulkes injured his right hip flexor during a Canterbury training session.

Both have been ruled out of the five-match T20I series against India. All-rounder Josh Clarkson and fast bowler Blair Tickner have been called into the T20I squad as replacements.

These are separate selection updates: Chapman and Foulkes have been ruled out of the T20I series, while O’Rourke will miss the wider India tour.

India Tour Schedule
New Zealand's home series against India includes:
Five T20Is: Beginning October 22, 2026.
Five ODIs: Scheduled to follow the T20I series, beginning November 1.
Two Tests: The first is scheduled to begin on November 19.

The series will be an important part of New Zealand's home international season, with the team managing player workloads ahead of the Australia Tests.

What Happens Next?

O’Rourke's immediate priority is to complete rehabilitation and gradually rebuild his bowling workload. New Zealand will monitor his progress before determining when he can return to domestic and international cricket.

For the Black Caps, the challenge is to manage their pace-bowling resources while maintaining preparation for the India series and the subsequent Australia tour.

No definitive return date has been confirmed for O’Rourke.
