India batter KL Rahul endured a difficult start to the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy season, scoring only four runs for Karnataka against Andhra in their opening-round match at the ACA Cricket Ground in Mulapadu.
Karnataka, last season’s runners-up, suffered an early collapse before stand-in captain R. Smaran produced a century to rescue the innings. The visitors eventually posted 274, but Andhra responded with a determined batting effort led by debutant S.V. Rahul, who scored an unbeaten century.
KL Rahul entered the domestic season looking to build match rhythm in red-ball cricket. However, his opening innings against Andhra lasted only 11 deliveries.
The right-handed batter edged a delivery from Andhra pacer K.V. Sasikanth to wicketkeeper Revanth Reddy, departing for four with Karnataka already under pressure.
Karnataka had elected to bat, but Andhra’s new-ball attack immediately exploited the conditions. Kavuri Saiteja dismissed Mayank Agarwal and K.V. Aneesh, while Sasikanth accounted for Rahul and Karun Nair.
At 22 for four, Karnataka faced the prospect of a very low first-innings total.
Stand-in captain R. Smaran provided the response Karnataka desperately needed. The left-handed batter remained composed while wickets fell around him, building an innings of 126 from 218 balls.
His knock included 11 fours and a six and helped Karnataka recover from 22 for four to 274.
Smaran received important support from wicketkeeper-batter K.L. Shrijith, who scored 58 from 82 deliveries. Their fifth-wicket partnership added 111 runs and helped stabilise the innings.
Smaran also worked with the lower order, including a useful partnership with debutant Madhav Bajaj, who contributed 33.
Karnataka’s recovery demonstrated the value of patience and partnerships in first-class cricket, even as their experienced top order struggled.
Andhra’s reply was led by 19-year-old left-handed batter S.V. Rahul, who scored an unbeaten 108 on his first-class debut.
The innings was particularly notable because Andhra had lost early wickets and needed a batter capable of absorbing pressure while keeping the scoreboard moving.
Rahul’s century helped the hosts recover and move ahead of Karnataka’s first-innings total. His performance followed a productive run in age-group and domestic cricket, including a century in the final of the Thimmappiah Memorial Tournament.
The debut innings marked a significant personal milestone and gave Andhra a strong platform in the opening-round contest.
Karnataka entered the season among the teams expected to challenge for the Ranji Trophy title after finishing as runners-up in the previous campaign. Their opening innings, however, highlighted the challenges of beginning a new season against an opponent capable of exploiting early conditions.
For Rahul, the immediate priority will be to respond in his next opportunity and continue preparing for the demands of international red-ball cricket.
Smaran’s century offered Karnataka a positive takeaway, while Andhra’s batting response showed the value of depth and resilience across a four-day match.
KL Rahul’s dismissal for four was an early setback for Karnataka, but R. Smaran’s 126 helped the visitors recover from a precarious position to post 274 against Andhra.
The hosts responded through debutant S.V. Rahul, whose unbeaten 108 helped Andhra fight back. The contest illustrated how quickly momentum can change in the Ranji Trophy, where partnerships and patience often matter as much as individual reputations.
