Harmanpreet Kaur rediscovered her power-hitting touch with an unbeaten 91 from 41 balls as India defeated Zimbabwe by 92 runs in the third and final women’s T20I in Raipur on October 20. The victory completed a 3-0 series sweep, with India posting 216 for seven before restricting Zimbabwe to 124 for seven in their 20 overs.
Shafali Verma provided the early momentum with 69 off 37 balls, and Nandani Sharma’s three-wicket haul helped close out the match. For Harmanpreet, the innings was a timely return to form after a difficult recent period, and it came as India prepare for the next phase of their international schedule.
India chose to bat first and experimented with the order, sending Anushka Sharma to open alongside Shafali Verma while regular opener Smriti Mandhana made room to give other batters time in the middle. Anushka scored 28 from 20 balls, and her partnership with Shafali helped India establish an attacking platform.
Shafali continued her strong run with a second consecutive half-century, scoring 69 from 37 deliveries. Her innings featured five sixes and six fours, keeping the scoring rate high before Harmanpreet took over after the opener’s dismissal.
Harmanpreet started more cautiously but accelerated sharply, finishing unbeaten on 91 from 41 balls. She hit 10 fours and five sixes, turning the final overs into a decisive scoring burst. India collected 62 runs in the last five overs, despite losing four wickets in that period, to finish at 216 for seven.
Zimbabwe faced a target of 217 but could not match India’s scoring pace. The visitors finished on 124 for seven after 20 overs, leaving India with a 92-run victory. Sharne Mayers top-scored for Zimbabwe with 60, offering resistance even as the required rate continued to rise.
Left-arm seamer Nandani Sharma was among India’s key performers with the ball, taking three wickets for 18 runs. Her spell disrupted Zimbabwe’s attempt to build a sustained chase and helped ensure India completed the series without conceding a match.
The margin made the result one of India’s strongest home wins by runs in women’s T20 internationals. Match reports also noted that the win extended India’s winning streak in the format to 11 matches, underlining the side’s consistency during this stretch.
Harmanpreet had been looking for rhythm after a challenging period with the bat, including the slow surfaces during the Women’s T20 Asia Cup. She stepped down as captain ahead of the Zimbabwe series, with Smriti Mandhana leading the side. The 91 not out therefore stood out not just for its scoring rate but for the confidence it could restore to an experienced middle-order batter.
During a mid-innings interview, Harmanpreet spoke about wanting time in the middle and the importance of enjoying her batting again. She credited encouragement from former India coach WV Raman, who had urged her to play on her own terms. The moment became emotional, reflecting the relief of finding a rhythm and seeing the runs come.
The innings should be viewed in its match context: it came against Zimbabwe, and one performance alone does not settle every question about long-term form. However, the timing is valuable for India as the team moves into a busy run of international cricket and continues to test batting combinations.
India and Zimbabwe now turn to a three-match women’s ODI series scheduled to begin in Vadodara on October 23. The change of format will require a different approach to pacing an innings, building partnerships and managing bowling spells, but Harmanpreet’s return to form gives India another experienced batter in good touch.
India’s clean sweep also gives the team room to assess the experiments made during the T20I series. Anushka Sharma’s opening opportunity and the promotion of Niki Prasad were part of a broader effort to give players experience. Some experiments produced encouraging signs, while others did not bring immediate returns, leaving selection decisions to be assessed ahead of the ODI matches.
