Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to interact with members of India’s contingent that participated in the Asian Games 2026 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday, October 15.
The programme is expected to begin at around 4:30 p.m., with the Prime Minister also set to address the gathering. Athletes, coaches, support staff, Indian Olympic Association officials, representatives of National Sports Federations and officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports are expected to attend.
The interaction comes after India finished fourth in the medal standings at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, collecting 85 medals across multiple sporting disciplines.
India secured 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals at the 2026 Asian Games, finishing fourth overall. The tally marked the country’s second-largest medal haul at the continental competition, behind its record performance at Hangzhou in 2023.
The campaign featured achievements across established sports as well as disciplines in which Indian athletes reached new milestones. The results also continued India’s presence among the leading nations in the Asian Games medal standings.
The meeting with the Prime Minister is an opportunity to recognise the athletes and support teams who represented the country throughout the competition.
India recorded several notable achievements during the Games. Both the men’s and women’s hockey teams won gold medals, marking a significant double success for Indian hockey.
Indian athletes also secured the country’s maiden Asian Games medals in soft tennis and mixed martial arts. Another milestone came in women’s trap shooting, where India won its first gold medal in the event.
India also returned to the podium in weightlifting, earning a silver medal after a 28-year gap in the discipline at the Asian Games. A silver in Greco-Roman wrestling ended a 64-year wait for an Indian finalist in that category.
These results highlighted the breadth of India’s campaign beyond its traditionally strong medal-winning sports.
The programme is expected to bring together athletes from different sports alongside the coaches and support personnel who helped prepare them for the Games.
The Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations and government sports officials are also expected to be represented. Their participation reflects the wider sporting ecosystem involved in preparing and supporting India’s international teams.
While individual athletes often receive public attention for their performances, coaches, medical teams, trainers and other support staff also play important roles in preparing competitors for a major multi-sport event.
India’s 85-medal finish provides a benchmark as the country continues to prepare athletes for future international competitions.
The achievements in hockey, archery, shooting, wrestling and emerging disciplines also underline the importance of sustained athlete development, specialist coaching and competitive opportunities across sports.
The Prime Minister’s scheduled interaction provides an occasion to acknowledge the contingent’s achievements and recognise the effort involved in representing India at a major international sporting event.
