Pune, Maharashtra, will host the 2032 UCI Road World Championships, marking a historic milestone for Indian cycling. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), cycling's global governing body, confirmed the decision at its Congress in Montréal, Canada, on 23 September 2026.

The award puts India on the calendar for one of international road cycling's biggest events and creates an opportunity to develop domestic talent, strengthen sporting infrastructure and attract greater international attention to the sport.

Pune Secures a Major International Cycling Event

The UCI confirmed Pune as the host of the 2032 Road World Championships following its bidding process. The Indian city competed against the Groningen and Drenthe region of the Netherlands for the hosting rights.

The championships will bring international road-cycling competition to India and offer an opportunity for local organisers, athletes and technical officials to gain experience in delivering a major global event.

The UCI has also highlighted the potential for the championships to encourage competitive cycling and everyday cycling participation in a country with a large population.

Bajaj Pune Grand Tour Helped Build Momentum

Pune's successful bid follows the inaugural Bajaj Pune Grand Tour, held from 19 to 23 January 2026. The men's stage race was an important step in India's development of international road-cycling events.

The event helped demonstrate Pune's capacity to organise a multi-stage race and engage spectators along its routes. The UCI subsequently selected the city for the 2032 world championships.

The next challenge will be to translate the hosting award into lasting improvements in athlete development, coaching, race organisation and the wider cycling ecosystem.

What the Championships Could Mean for Indian Cycling

Hosting a world championship can provide domestic athletes with greater exposure to international competition and create opportunities for coaches, officials, event organisers and sports professionals.

For India, the lead-up to 2032 offers time to strengthen training pathways, improve competition opportunities and develop the expertise required to stage elite road racing.

However, the hosting award alone does not guarantee improved international results. Long-term progress will depend on preparation, sustained investment, athlete development and effective event delivery.

Connection With India's 2036 Olympic Ambitions

The Pune announcement comes amid India's wider ambition to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Indian Olympic Association announced its vision for the Games under the theme “Rising Together”, with the proposed Indian ambition centred on Amdavad, Gujarat.

Cycling is an Olympic sport, making the development of cycling infrastructure and international event-hosting experience relevant to India's broader sporting plans. Nevertheless, Pune's 2032 world championships and India's Olympic ambition are separate matters: hosting the cycling championships does not determine the outcome of the Olympic host-selection process.

The International Olympic Committee's selection process remains ongoing, and India's eventual hosting prospects depend on that process.

What Happens Next?

The years leading up to 2032 will be important for planning the event, preparing suitable race routes, coordinating with international governing bodies and ensuring the necessary operational arrangements are in place.

For Indian cycling, the immediate priority is to use the hosting opportunity to support athletes and build a stronger competitive environment beyond the championships themselves.

Pune's selection represents a significant step for the sport in India. Its long-term impact will depend on how effectively the country converts the international event into sustainable opportunities for cyclists and the wider sporting community.
