India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has acknowledged that Jasprit Bumrah cannot be replaced, while expressing confidence in the country’s emerging pace-bowling talent following India’s 24-run defeat to West Indies in the fourth T20 International in Hyderabad.
Bumrah was rested for the ongoing five-match series, and India’s bowling attack struggled to contain West Indies in a high-scoring encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on October 14.
Speaking after the match, Samson described Bumrah as a “once-in-a-generation” bowler. However, he also backed Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav, stressing that young bowlers would improve with regular opportunities and continued support.
Bumrah’s absence has brought renewed attention to India’s bowling depth, particularly in matches where opposition batters attack aggressively from the start.
Samson acknowledged the challenge of replacing a bowler with Bumrah’s skill and experience. At the same time, he argued that India have promising talent coming through the ranks.
He praised Arshdeep’s contribution and highlighted Prince Yadav’s performances in recent matches. Samson’s message was that the team should continue backing its emerging bowlers rather than judging them solely on difficult outings.
The comments come at a time when India are looking to strengthen their bowling combinations ahead of the series decider and future international assignments.
West Indies took advantage of the batting-friendly conditions in Hyderabad, finishing on 247/3 in their 20 overs.
Captain Shai Hope led the charge with an unbeaten 102 off 50 deliveries, while Sherfane Rutherford contributed an unbeaten 49 off 26 balls.
India struggled to slow the scoring. Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep Singh conceded 52 runs apiece in their four overs, putting additional pressure on the attack as West Indies built a formidable total.
The visitors’ aggressive batting meant India needed an exceptional chase to stay in contention.
India began the chase positively, with Samson scoring 56 off just 23 balls. His attacking innings gave the hosts an early push towards the target of 248.
However, West Indies regained control through timely wickets. Keemo Paul removed Samson and Ishan Kishan in a crucial spell before returning to take further wickets later in the innings.
Tilak Varma scored 43 off 25 balls, while Nitish Kumar Reddy made 41 off 20 deliveries. Their 70-run partnership for the sixth wicket briefly revived India’s hopes.
Samson identified Tilak’s dismissal as a turning point, explaining that the partnership had put pressure back on the West Indies bowlers. India eventually collapsed to 223 all out in 19.3 overs, losing by 24 runs.
Paul finished with figures of 5/41, delivering the decisive bowling performance for the visitors.
Despite the defeat, Samson maintained that India’s young bowlers have the ability to develop into reliable international performers.
His comments placed the emphasis on giving emerging players consistent opportunities and backing them through challenging performances. Arshdeep has already established himself as an important member of India’s pace attack, while Prince Yadav has attracted attention with his recent outings.
The challenge for India is to improve execution in high-scoring conditions, particularly when defending totals and bowling at the death.
India’s management will also need to assess the balance between specialist fast bowlers, spin options and all-rounders as the team prepares for future T20 assignments.
India also have a fitness concern to monitor after Arshdeep was struck on the left arm by a delivery from Shamar Joseph during the fourth T20I. He received attention and left the field after retiring hurt during the chase.
Samson said Arshdeep was applying ice to his shoulder and expressed hope that the fast bowler would recover in time for the final match. His availability will be an important consideration for India’s team management.
Any final decision on his participation should be confirmed through an official team update.
The fourth T20I defeat levelled the five-match series at 2–2, setting up a decisive final match in Bengaluru on October 17, 2026.
India will look to improve their bowling execution and deliver a more complete performance in the series decider. West Indies, meanwhile, will take confidence from their ability to post a big total and defend it under pressure.
Samson’s remarks underline the balance India must strike: recognising Bumrah’s unique value while continuing to build a dependable bowling unit for the future.
