India began their New Zealand tour with a four-wicket victory in the first T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Chasing New Zealand’s 226-run target, India completed the pursuit with four wickets remaining to take an early lead in the five-match series.
New Zealand set the visitors a challenging total of 225/4 in their 20 overs after India won the toss and chose to field. Glenn Phillips led the home side’s scoring with an unbeaten 82 from 40 balls, while Finn Allen’s quick 45 from 24 deliveries helped New Zealand build an aggressive platform.
Phillips provided the innings’ defining contribution, striking at a rate of 205.00 and hitting eight fours and three sixes in his 40-ball stay. His unbeaten innings kept New Zealand scoring strongly through the middle and final overs, leaving India with a demanding chase.
Allen added 45 from 24 balls, including five fours and two sixes, before being dismissed. Daryl Mitchell made 28 from 19 deliveries, and Bevon Jacobs contributed 31 from 16 balls. New Zealand finished on 225/4, with the batting effort giving the hosts a strong chance of defending their total.
India’s bowling attack faced a difficult evening against the home side’s power hitting. Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Axar Patel each took a wicket in the innings, while the New Zealand batters maintained a high scoring rate across the 20 overs.
Sanju Samson supplied India with a rapid start, scoring 67 from 33 balls. He reached his half-century in just 23 deliveries, attacking the New Zealand bowlers early and giving the chase momentum before being dismissed by captain Mitchell Santner.
Samson’s innings included eight fours and four sixes. His partnership with Abhishek Sharma helped India make early progress toward the target, although New Zealand fought back with wickets to prevent the chase from becoming straightforward. Abhishek made 29 from 12 balls before Michael Bracewell removed him.
New Zealand’s spinners brought the hosts back into the contest during the middle overs. Santner and Bracewell took two wickets each, putting pressure on India after the quick start. India nevertheless kept the required rate within reach and completed the chase to secure a four-wicket win.
The opening victory gives India a positive start to a five-match T20I series in New Zealand. Chasing a total above 220 away from home required an assertive powerplay and enough composure to navigate the middle overs after New Zealand took wickets.
For New Zealand, Phillips’ unbeaten 82 and the team’s 225-run total were not enough to prevent defeat. The home side will look to tighten its defence of a big score in the next match, particularly after India’s top order made such a fast start.
The second T20I is scheduled for October 24 at Hagley Oval, giving both teams another match at the same venue before the series moves to Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton. India will aim to build on the opening win, while New Zealand will look for a response and a series-leveling result.
With four matches remaining after the opener, the result is an early marker rather than a decisive outcome for the series. The teams’ next contest will offer New Zealand a chance to respond and India an opportunity to strengthen their advantage.
