Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the national T20I side, saying the senior seamer’s experience and quality make him an obvious selection ahead of India’s five-match series in New Zealand. The series begins in Christchurch on October 22, 2026, after Bhuvneshwar was named in India’s 16-member squad following nearly four years away from international T20 cricket.
Shastri argued that international experience is difficult to replace, particularly when a bowler has the quality to make it count. Speaking about Bhuvneshwar’s selection, he said: “There is no substitute for experience. It’s not bought or sold in the market, so when you have experience with that kind of quality, it’s a no-brainer.”
The former coach’s endorsement comes as India prepare for a demanding tour across formats. Shastri also highlighted the challenge awaiting Shubman Gill as captain in New Zealand, noting that overseas leadership brings its own demands even for a player familiar with local conditions. His comments placed the tour in a broader context than the T20I series alone.
Bhuvneshwar’s return has been confirmed in the squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The ICC reported that India have retained much of the group involved in the West Indies T20Is, with the experienced right-arm pacer the key addition. Shreyas Iyer continues as captain, while Tilak Varma is vice-captain.
Bhuvneshwar last played a T20I for India in November 2022, with his previous international appearance in the format also coming against New Zealand. His recall therefore brings a familiar name back into the attack for a series in conditions where movement with the new ball may be important. The ICC specifically noted his ability to generate swing as a potential asset in New Zealand.
His recent Indian Premier League form has strengthened the case for a return. Wisden reported that Bhuvneshwar collected 45 wickets across the last two IPL seasons for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, performances that helped put him back in contention. Those returns provide a recent competitive reference point, while Shastri’s comments underline the value of combining current form with international know-how.
His inclusion does not guarantee a place in every match or a particular role, but it gives India another experienced pace option as the team assesses combinations ahead of future tournaments. The balance between swing, control and the pace options available to the captain will be important across a five-match series.
5: T20 internationals scheduled in the India–New Zealand series.
October 22, 2026: The series opener in Christchurch.
16: Players named in India’s T20I squad.
Nearly four years: The gap between Bhuvneshwar’s previous T20I appearance and his recall.
45 wickets: Bhuvneshwar’s combined IPL wicket tally across the last two seasons, as reported by Wisden.
India’s T20I series begins in Christchurch on October 22, with four more matches to follow. The immediate question is how the team deploys its experienced seamer in New Zealand conditions and whether his swing and control translate into early breakthroughs and reliable overs at the end of an innings.
For India, the recall is also a reminder that selection debates can extend beyond age or time away from the team. Bhuvneshwar’s recent franchise performances and long international record have brought him back into the discussion, while Shastri’s backing highlights the value he believes experience can bring to a squad preparing for an overseas challenge.
