Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in India's T20I setup.
The veteran fast bowler has been named in India's 16-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, marking his return to international cricket after nearly four years. The selection was announced on October 6, with the series scheduled to begin on October 22 in Christchurch.
Bhuvneshwar, 36, last represented India in a T20I against New Zealand in November 2022. His recall comes after an impressive run of form for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, where his experience, movement and control have once again made him a major threat with the white ball.
The biggest factor behind Bhuvneshwar's comeback has been his performances in the IPL.
In IPL 2026, the right-arm pacer claimed 28 wickets in 16 matches at an economy rate of 7.95, finishing just one wicket behind the leading wicket-taker. His performances helped RCB secure another IPL title.
Across the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons, Bhuvneshwar took 45 wickets in 31 matches, playing a key role in RCB's back-to-back title-winning campaigns.
His ability to swing the new ball, bowl accurately through the middle overs and contribute at the death has given India's pace attack another experienced option.
Bhuvneshwar's return comes at an interesting time for India's bowling unit.
Jasprit Bumrah has not been included in the T20I squad as India manages his workload ahead of the longer assignments on the New Zealand tour. Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav are among the other pace options selected.
That could give Bhuvneshwar an important role if he is selected in the playing XI. New Zealand conditions could also suit his ability to generate movement with the new ball.
Bhuvneshwar's return is particularly significant given how long he has been away from international cricket.
His last India appearance came in 2022, and for much of the intervening period, an international comeback appeared unlikely. Instead, he continued to perform in domestic cricket and the IPL, rebuilding his bowling and physical conditioning.
His recent performances have demonstrated that his greatest strengths — swing, accuracy, experience and bowling intelligence — remain valuable in T20 cricket.
India's T20I squad for New Zealand
Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (WK), Tilak Varma (Vice-Captain), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav.
Varun Chakaravarthy also returns to the squad, while Shreyas Iyer continues as captain and Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain.
The five-match series begins at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22.
For Bhuvneshwar, the series represents more than just another international assignment. It is an opportunity to show that experience and skill can still compete at the highest level of modern T20 cricket.
After four years away, the "Swing King" has another chance to wear India colours.
