India’s Chandermohan began his men’s freestyle 79kg campaign at the 2026 U23 World Wrestling Championships with an 11-0 technical-fall victory over United States wrestler Joseph Lee Sealey in Las Vegas on October 17. The qualification-round win was a decisive opening result for the Indian, who entered the event after taking gold in the 79kg category at the 2026 U23 Asian Championships.
USA Wrestling’s official match notes describe a controlled performance by Chandermohan. Sealey went on the activity clock first at 4:37, and Chandermohan tried to push the American toward the edge of the mat. A step-out gave Chandermohan an early point, and after Sealey’s shot clock expired, the Indian moved ahead 2-0.
Chandermohan added another point with a second step-out and then scored his first takedown to establish a 5-0 lead at the interval. The sequence gave him a comfortable advantage heading into the second period and forced Sealey to look for a way back into the match.
Chandermohan defended against an ankle-pick attempt, got behind Sealey for another takedown and then used two turns on the leg lace to complete the 11-0 scoreline. USA Wrestling recorded the result as a technical fall. The scoreline reflects a bout finished before the full regulation period because of the technical-fall margin.
A clear win in the qualification round gave Chandermohan a strong start in a competitive international field. The U23 World Championships bring together wrestlers from multiple national programmes, and a technical fall can help a wrestler progress without spending the full duration on the mat. The result also showed Chandermohan converting positional control and scoring opportunities into a decisive margin.
The bout was part of the 2026 U23 World Championships in Las Vegas, United States, scheduled from October 12 to 18. United World Wrestling listed the matchup as a men’s freestyle 79kg qualification contest. The event is a major age-group international competition for wrestlers moving toward senior-level championships.
Chandermohan arrived at the tournament with recent success at continental level. United World Wrestling’s athlete archive lists him as the winner of the 79kg title at the 2026 U23 Asian Championships in Vietnam. His results there included wins by technical superiority in the quarterfinal and semifinal before he won the final against Kazakhstan’s Yerkhan Abil by a narrow score of 7-6.
That Asian title provided a strong reference point for his world-level campaign, although the U23 World Championships offered a different field and a new bracket. A qualification-round win does not itself guarantee a medal, but it allows the wrestler to move into the next stage and continue competing for a place in the later rounds.
Sealey represented the United States at 79kg after being named as a replacement on the U23 men’s freestyle roster. USA Wrestling announced on September 30 that Sealey would replace Matty Singleton. The organisation noted that Sealey had placed third at both the U.S. Open and the Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament at 74kg earlier in 2026.
Following the loss to Chandermohan, USA Wrestling listed Sealey as awaiting repechage. A wrestler’s chance to return through repechage depends on the progress of the opponent who defeated them, so the loss did not automatically settle every possible route back into the competition at the moment of the initial result.
For Indian wrestling, Chandermohan’s victory was a positive opening result in a weight class where he had already shown continental-level form. His performance combined early pressure, points from step-outs, a takedown and turns on the leg lace. Those details offer a practical illustration of how scoring actions can build a technical-fall margin rather than relying on one decisive move.
The result is a first step, not the end of the campaign. Chandermohan’s progress through the remaining bracket and the final placing at 79kg are the measures that will determine the overall outcome of his U23 World Championships appearance. The confirmed result from this qualification bout, however, was emphatic: Chandermohan defeated Sealey 11-0 by technical fall.
