The
National Inter District Junior Athletics Meet (NIDJAM) is a premier grassroots talent identification program. Organised by the
Athletics Federation of India (AFI) in collaboration with host state governments, it serves as the world's largest rural sports program targeting under-14 and under-16 age categories. The tournament is structured to uncover and nurture raw athletic talent directly from the district levels across India. Operational Model & Objectives
- Grassroots Pipeline: Only District Athletics Associations that successfully host their local District Athletics Meets are eligible to participate. Top performers from these local selections advance to the national meet.
- Equal Opportunity: NIDJAM ensures that junior athletes from remote, rural, and semi-urban backgrounds get an even playing field to compete on a national stage.
- AFI UID System: To eliminate age fraud and build a clean national database, every athlete must possess a verified Athletics Federation of India Unique Identification (AFI UID) to register.
- State Support: The federation ensures financial constraints do not stop young talent by completely subsidising boarding, lodging, and railway travel fares for a designated number of athletes and officials from each participating district.
Event Format EvolutionUnlike traditional meets where athletes select isolated track or field events, NIDJAM emphasizes balanced athletic development, especially for the younger brackets:
- Under-14 Combined Events: Athletes are required to participate in structured "Triathlon" groupings (combining short sprints, long jumps, high jumps, or weighted back throws) to evaluate comprehensive motor skills.
- Mandatory Multi-Disciplinary Throws: Elements like the Kids Javelin Throw are compulsory for all U-14 participants to foster upper-body mechanical coordination early.
- Under-16 Specialization: The older bracket bridges the gap to professional junior athletics, hosting standard age-appropriate technical tracks like the 80m Hurdles, Shot Put, Pentathlon, and specialized sprint distances.
