P.T. Usha set the previous benchmark at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Ramraj matched it in Hangzhou in 2023 before improving it by 0.67 seconds in 2026. The performance made her the first Indian woman to break the 55-second barrier in the event, according to The Hindu’s report.
The Hindu’s analysis of World Athletics data placed Ramraj 12th among Asian performances and noted that the depth of competition in the region has grown since Usha’s era. The report said 12 performances are now under 55 seconds, illustrating how the event’s competitive landscape has changed.
Ramraj’s coach, Nehpal Singh Rathore, told The Hindu that her improvement in the flat 400m and the 400m hurdles has gone hand in hand. The report noted that her flat 400m best improved from 54.48 seconds in 2018 to 51.96 seconds in 2026, while her hurdles best progressed from 59.70 seconds to 54.75 seconds over the same period.
Ramraj’s individual bronze was part of a wider campaign at the 2026 Asian Games. The Hindu reported that she also anchored India to gold in the women’s 4x400m relay and won silver in the mixed 4x400m relay.
Her record-breaking run moved a long-standing national benchmark and offered a snapshot of both her individual development and the wider progress of women’s 400m hurdles in Asia.
