Mumbai pacer Tushar Deshpande delivered a remarkable performance on the second day of their Ranji Trophy 2026–27 match against Chandigarh, claiming a hat-trick and finishing with figures of 5/17 in the visitors’ first innings at Wankhede Stadium.
Mumbai, who resumed at 249/5, went on to post 429 in their first innings. Chandigarh struggled against Deshpande’s pace and movement, collapsing for just 78 in 19.1 overs. Mumbai enforced the follow-on and took another wicket before the close of play, leaving Chandigarh at 0/1.
Deshpande struck early, dismissing opener Arslan Khan before producing a devastating sequence in the 11th over.
He removed Arjun Azad, Shivam Bhambri and Dipender Kush in consecutive deliveries to complete the hat-trick. Azad was caught at long leg, Bhambri was bowled, and Kush was caught at first slip.
The three wickets left Chandigarh reeling and shifted the match decisively in Mumbai’s favour. Deshpande continued his spell by dismissing Raj Angad Bawa, completing a five-wicket haul in just seven overs.
His figures of 5/17 underlined the effectiveness of his pace bowling and ability to exploit the conditions.
Mumbai’s batting effort provided the foundation for Deshpande’s bowling display. Resuming on 249/5, the hosts received important contributions from their middle and lower order to reach 429 in 136.5 overs.
Siddhesh Lad top-scored with 86, while Tanush Kotian made 58 and Mohit Avasthi remained unbeaten on 56. Deshpande also contributed 44 off 47 balls, striking four fours and two sixes.
The lower-order runs extended Mumbai’s total and kept Chandigarh’s bowlers on the field for long periods.
For Chandigarh, Raj Angad Bawa took 4/73, while Rohit Dhanda claimed 4/78.
Chandigarh’s first innings never recovered from Deshpande’s opening burst. They were dismissed for 78 in 19.1 overs, giving Mumbai a first-innings lead of 351 runs.
Nishunk Birla top-scored with 33 off 15 balls, including five fours and a six. Arjun Azad made 20, but the remaining batters struggled to withstand Mumbai’s attack.
Mohit Avasthi supported Deshpande with three wickets for nine runs, while Sylvester D’Souza claimed two wickets.
The collapse allowed Mumbai to enforce the follow-on and put Chandigarh under immediate pressure again.
Mumbai did not have to wait long for another breakthrough. Deshpande dismissed Vishu Kashyap in the only over of Chandigarh’s second innings, leaving the visitors at 0/1 at stumps.
His match tally had therefore reached six wickets by the end of the second day, including the five-wicket haul and hat-trick in the first innings.
Mumbai entered the third day in a commanding position, while Chandigarh faced the challenge of overcoming a substantial deficit and avoiding defeat.
The performance came in Deshpande’s 50th first-class match. His hat-trick made him the sixth Mumbai bowler to achieve the feat for the team in first-class cricket.
The previous Mumbai bowlers on the list are Jehangir Khot, Umesh Kulkarni, Abdul Ismail, Royston Dias and Shardul Thakur.
Deshpande had also recently represented India A and West Zone, making his strong Ranji Trophy performance another important contribution to his domestic season.
Tushar Deshpande’s hat-trick and five-wicket haul put Mumbai firmly in control of their Ranji Trophy match against Chandigarh. His 5/17 helped dismiss Chandigarh for 78 after Mumbai posted 429, and he struck again after the follow-on to finish the day with six wickets.
With Mumbai holding a 351-run first-innings lead and Chandigarh at 0/1 in their second innings, the hosts had established a commanding position heading into the third day.
