Ranchi has produced several notable names in Indian cricket, and young batter Shikhar Mohan is emerging as another player to watch. The Jharkhand opener has begun the 2026–27 domestic season with an impressive performance, scoring 143 against Kerala in the Ranji Trophy.
The innings followed a productive debut Ranji Trophy season in 2025–26, when Mohan scored 613 runs at an average of 55.73, including two centuries. His latest performance has strengthened the attention surrounding his progress in Indian domestic cricket.
Mohan began the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy season with a century against Kerala at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur. His 143 provided Jharkhand with a substantial contribution in the opening match and continued the progress he had demonstrated during the previous season.
The innings was particularly significant because opponents now have more footage and match experience to study. Mohan has acknowledged that sustaining performance in a second season can be challenging as teams become increasingly familiar with a batter’s strengths and weaknesses.
His approach, therefore, will involve continued improvement, careful shot selection and maintaining concentration over long periods at the crease.
Mohan’s first Ranji Trophy season established the foundation for his growing reputation. He accumulated 613 runs at an average of 55.73, including two centuries.
Those numbers demonstrated his ability to contribute consistently in first-class cricket rather than relying on isolated performances. For a young batter progressing through the domestic structure, converting starts into substantial innings is an important part of building a long-term career.
Mohan has also spoken about working to improve his concentration during the middle stages of an innings. Guidance from Jharkhand coach Ratan Kumar and former state cricketer Ishank Jaggi helped him address that area of his batting.
Mohan’s performances have extended beyond Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy campaign.
Representing East Zone in the Duleep Trophy final, he scored 85 and 52 across the two innings. The performances gave him an opportunity to compete against leading domestic players and gain experience in a high-pressure fixture.
He subsequently represented Rest of India in the Irani Cup against defending Ranji Trophy champions Jammu and Kashmir, scoring 60 on a challenging surface in Srinagar.
These appearances have added to his experience across major domestic red-ball competitions and allowed him to test his batting against different conditions and opposition attacks.
Mohan has credited senior cricketers, including Ishan Kishan, with helping him refine his batting decisions.
During the Duleep Trophy final in Chennai, Kishan advised him on shot selection and adapting to the conditions of a red-soil pitch, which differed from the surfaces Mohan was more accustomed to playing on in the East Zone.
Such guidance can be valuable for young batters learning to adjust their game to unfamiliar pitches, bowling styles and match situations. Mohan’s willingness to discuss these experiences reflects the importance of preparation and tactical awareness in the longer format.
Mohan comes from Doranda in Ranchi, a city closely associated with Indian cricket through former India captain MS Dhoni and other players who have represented Jharkhand.
According to reporting by The Times of India and The Indian Express, cricket has also been a family aspiration for Mohan. His progress carries particular significance because his father had once hoped to pursue a cricket career but could not continue that path because of family responsibilities.
Mohan’s development through junior cricket, state age-group teams and the senior Jharkhand side has been the result of years of training and competition.
He was selected for Jharkhand’s Under-16 team at 13 and subsequently recorded strong run totals in age-group cricket, including 623 runs in the 2023–24 C.K. Nayudu Trophy season and 887 runs the following season.
Those performances helped him progress towards senior domestic cricket.
Mohan’s recent scores have put him in the spotlight, but sustaining that performance will be the next challenge. Domestic cricket requires batters to adapt as opposition teams develop specific plans to counter them.
For Jharkhand, his ability to provide solid starts and convert them into large innings could be important throughout the Ranji Trophy campaign. His performances in the Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup have also provided opportunities to gain experience against strong domestic opposition.
Any discussion of higher honours remains premature without an official selection announcement. For now, his focus is on continuing to score runs and helping Jharkhand achieve its team objectives.
Shikhar Mohan’s progress from junior cricket in Ranchi to strong performances in the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup illustrates the work involved in developing a domestic cricket career.
His 613-run debut Ranji season and 143 against Kerala at the start of the new campaign have brought renewed attention to his batting. The challenge now is to maintain that consistency and continue developing against increasingly familiar opposition.
