VANTAA, Finland: PV Sindhu and rising Indian star Tanvi Sharma have kept India’s women’s singles hopes alive at the Arctic Open 2026, with both players advancing to the Round of 16 at the BWF Super 500 tournament in Vantaa.
Sixth seed Sindhu began her campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang 21-8, 21-11 in just 28 minutes. The two-time Olympic medallist controlled the match from the opening rallies and never allowed Zhang, who came through qualifying, to build momentum.
Sindhu’s next challenge is Japan’s Riko Gunji. The Indian has already beaten Gunji once this season, winning their Singapore Open meeting in straight games.
Tanvi Sharma also advanced after producing an impressive straight-game victory over Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-Chian, winning 21-15, 21-17.
The result adds another notable win to what has been a breakthrough period for the young Indian shuttler. Tanvi now faces the tournament’s top seed and former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the Round of 16.
It is a major test for Tanvi, but also an opportunity to make another statement on the BWF World Tour.
India’s women’s singles campaign has otherwise suffered a series of narrow defeats.
Unnati Hooda pushed China’s Han Qianxi to the limit before losing 16-21, 21-15, 22-24 after 68 minutes. Ashmita Chaliha also came close against seventh seed Line Christophersen, eventually losing 7-21, 21-14, 24-26.
Malvika Bansod was beaten 21-18, 21-13 by Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour, while Isharani Baruah lost 21-10, 21-15 to top seed Ratchanok Intanon.
With those exits, Sindhu and Tanvi are now India’s remaining representatives in the women’s singles draw.
There was positive news elsewhere in the Indian contingent. Krishna Prasad Garaga and Pruthvi Krishnamurthy Roy produced one of India’s biggest results of the tournament so far, upsetting fifth seeds He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu of China 10-21, 21-18, 22-20 to reach the Round of 16.
Tharun Mannepalli also progressed in men’s singles, while experienced campaigners Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy were eliminated in the opening round.
For India, the focus now turns to Sindhu and Tanvi as they chase deeper runs in Finland.
