Former India batter Mohammed Kaif has raised concerns about India’s T20 bowling combination following the team’s 24-run defeat to West Indies in the fourth T20 International in Hyderabad on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Kaif criticised India’s bowling performance and warned that the current combination would struggle to deliver the results required to defend the T20 World Cup title in 2028. His comments came after West Indies posted 247/3 and restricted India to 223 in the high-scoring contest.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Kaif argued that India’s bowlers must contribute to winning matches rather than relying heavily on the batting unit.
He pointed to the pattern of the ongoing five-match series, suggesting that a successful team needs its bowlers to win games as well as its batters.
Kaif’s criticism centred on the team’s ability to contain opposition scoring and deliver under pressure. In his assessment, India’s current bowling combination has not consistently provided the support required in high-scoring T20 matches.
His remarks put the spotlight on team balance and the need to assess whether the existing attack has the depth and consistency required for major tournaments.
India struggled to control West Indies’ scoring in the fourth T20I.
Mayank Yadav and Arshdeep Singh conceded a combined 104 runs across eight overs, while Axar Patel gave away 45 runs in four overs. Prince Yadav was India’s most economical wicket-taking option among the bowlers highlighted in the report, finishing with figures of 1/36.
West Indies captain Shai Hope capitalised on the bowling difficulties, scoring a century as the visitors reached 247/3 in 20 overs.
India’s chase showed attacking intent, but the target proved too demanding. The hosts finished on 223 all out in 19.3 overs, losing by 24 runs.
India captain Shreyas Iyer also identified the bowling performance as a major factor in the defeat.
At the post-match presentation, Iyer said India had not executed their lines and lengths well enough, allowing West Indies to build a substantial total. He added that chasing such a high target required a particular approach, and India fell short after failing to carry out their plans with the ball.
The captain’s assessment echoed Kaif’s concerns about the team’s bowling execution, although the comments do not by themselves establish what selection changes India will make.
The defeat has renewed discussion about India’s balance ahead of the next T20 World Cup in 2028. Kaif’s remarks underline a key question for the team management: whether the current attack can consistently defend totals and take wickets against strong opposition.
The challenge is not simply about individual performances in one match. India will need to evaluate combinations, execution under pressure and the balance between batting depth and specialist bowling as preparations continue.
With the five-match series level at 2–2, India have an immediate opportunity to respond in the deciding T20I against West Indies in Bengaluru.
