Rabada missed the first Test in Durban while recovering from a hamstring injury. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said after the defeat that the fast bowler was progressing well and looked in good shape ahead of the next match. The International Cricket Council reported that Rabada was in contention for selection for the Test beginning on October 18.
Rabada has not played since featuring for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in May, according to the ICC. His return would give South Africa an experienced pace option as they look to respond to Australia’s first-Test victory.
Australia assistant coach Matthew Wade warned that Rabada’s competitiveness and willingness to attack batters would make him a difficult opponent. Reuters reported that Australia expected South Africa to have more pace-bowling flexibility with Rabada available, potentially alongside Anrich Nortje.
Rabada has a strong Test record against Australia. The ICC noted that he had taken 58 wickets against them in 11 matches. His possible return is therefore a key selection storyline, although his inclusion in the final playing XI should not be treated as confirmed until the teams are announced.
South Africa lost the opening Test by 214 runs in Durban. The selectors have also made a batting change for the second Test, naming Matthew Breetzke in place of Tristan Stubbs in the squad, while Ryan Rickelton is set to take over wicketkeeping duties, according to the ICC.
The second Test is scheduled to begin in Gqeberha on October 18. South Africa will hope Rabada’s availability can help them make a stronger challenge, while Australia arrive with confidence after taking the lead in the series.
