India’s men’s hockey team has established itself as the most successful side in the history of the Asian Champions Trophy, with five title wins since the tournament began in 2011. The record includes a shared championship with Pakistan in 2018, alongside outright titles in 2011, 2016, 2023 and 2024.
With the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 scheduled to take place from October 27 to November 5, Indian hockey will once again be in the spotlight as the continent’s leading teams prepare to compete on Indian soil.
The Asian Champions Trophy was established in 2011 to bring Asia’s leading men’s hockey teams together in a regular continental competition. India made an immediate impact by winning the inaugural edition in China.
The team continued to add to its record over subsequent editions, lifting the trophy again in 2016 and sharing the 2018 title with Pakistan after the final in Muscat was abandoned because of heavy rain.
India returned to the top in 2023, winning the tournament in Chennai, before claiming another title in China in 2024.
| Year | Result |
|---|---|
| 2011 | Champions |
| 2016 | Champions |
| 2018 | Joint champions with Pakistan |
| 2023 | Champions |
| 2024 | Champions |
These five title wins make India the most successful team in the men’s Asian Champions Trophy. The 2018 result is counted as a championship because India and Pakistan were officially declared joint winners.
India’s standing in Asian hockey has been reinforced by its performances at the Asian Games. At the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, India defeated Malaysia 5–1 in the men’s gold-medal match to defend its title and secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The victory was another significant achievement for a team that has consistently challenged for major continental honours.
India’s success in the Asian Games and its Asian Champions Trophy record give the side a strong foundation heading into the next competition. However, the Champions Trophy is a separate tournament, and past titles do not guarantee success in the upcoming edition.
The 2026 edition will bring international hockey back to Punjab, a region with a deep-rooted hockey tradition.
According to Hockey India, the competition will run from October 27 to November 5 across two venues:
Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium, Jalandhar: All league-stage matches are scheduled to be played here from October 27 to November 2.
Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium, Mohali: The semi-finals are scheduled for November 4, followed by the bronze-medal and gold-medal matches on November 5.
India, Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea and Bangladesh are listed among the participating teams for the tournament.
Playing in front of home supporters offers India an opportunity to showcase its hockey strength while competing against some of Asia’s leading sides. The league stage will be important for establishing momentum before the knockout matches in Mohali.
India will enter the tournament with a strong historical record, but the six-team competition is expected to provide a fresh challenge. Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, China and Bangladesh will all be seeking strong performances.
For India, the priorities will be to maintain defensive discipline, convert scoring opportunities and manage the pressure of playing at home. The tournament will also provide an opportunity to sustain the confidence built through recent international success.
The final outcome will depend on performances during the competition rather than historical records alone.
India’s five Asian Champions Trophy titles underline its long-standing influence on men’s hockey in Asia. From the inaugural triumph in 2011 to the victories in 2023 and 2024, the team has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to compete for continental honours.
As the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 approaches, Indian fans will be hoping that the team can translate its impressive record and recent Asian Games success into another memorable campaign on home soil.
